Achilles tendinopathy is a degeneration of the Achilles tendon’s body, not an inflammatory condition. It commonly manifests with pain, stiffness, and swelling and is often incorrectly referred to as tendinitis or tendonitis (the ending “itis” refers to an inflammatory condition). In runners, Achilles tendinopathy is usually caused by repetitive stress (overuse: too much running, not enough rest between runs). Tight or weak calf muscles can also increase the stress on the tendon, leading to Achilles tendinopathy over time. Eccentric strength training for the calf muscles is a potent treatment for Achilles tendinopathy.
